Pride is a huge celebration and party for sure, but it also is a time to educate society about queer issues and promote queer equality. You can make a difference simply by attending rides in June 2023 (see the Charity of the Month section below).
You have likely heard about the flood of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the US. Point and case, the “Don’t Say Gay” law in Florida that prevents educators from discussing sexual orientation or gender identity with students (recently leading to a teacher being investigated for showing the Disney movie “Strange World” because the story includes an openly gay character). Unfortunately, drag, one of the cornerstones of queer culture, has been under attack as well. Most notably, public drag was just banned in Tennessee. This ban has far reaching consequences especially for the transgender community. A transgender individual can be prosecuted under the ban because they are not presenting in public as their gender assigned at birth.
What you may not know is laws like these are being proposed in our state. We believe that marginalized groups deserve visibility and everybody should have the ability to be their true self in public. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been at the center of nearly every major civil liberties battle in the U.S. for over 100 years and these current issues are no exception. Therefore for every ride you attend in June, Everybody Cycle will donate $1 to the ACLU of Ohio, our charity of the month. If we fully book all our rides in June, together we will raise approximately $1,000 for the ACLU of Ohio!
